Another 40-year-old woman commits suicide


The Nigeria Police on Monday disclosed that a citizen, Nkemjika Oyibe, a native of Ishinkwo, Abaomege community in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has committed suicide.

According to the police, Nkem’s lifeless body was found hanging on a tree in Onyemem forest in the community.

Last month, a female tailor, simply known as Funmi also committed suicide in Yaba, Lagos State.

Speaking on the issue on Monday in Abakaliki, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Loveth Odah, however said that the command is still investigating the incident.

According to her, the town union president of the community (name withheld) had reported that upon getting information from a hunter who discovered the lifeless body of the deceased, he went to the forest with the deceased’s elder brother, Peter Onyibe, to see the body for himself.

“But I wonder why a person should commit suicide and the family did not suspect any foul play; unless the family knew that their sister was having problem and as a result of that, they were suspecting she would commit suicide.

“They should have also been eager to know what led to her committing suicide. There is a saying that life begins at 40. So, someone taking her life at 40 sounds strange,” she said.

The mouthpiece of the command further explained that the body has been released to the family for burial and that no suspect had been arrested in connection with the incident.

In a telephone interview with the town union president, who collaborated the report that the family did not suspect any person in connection with the death of the deceased, he said the lady hung herself and had made similar attempts to commit suicide by taking drugs but she survived it.

According to him, she had a mental problem and had disappeared from public scene on December 25, 2017, from public domain.

The president noted that after several efforts in search of deceased, the family gave up the search only to be alerted by a hunter, who went to check on his trap that the deceased’s body was dangling on a tree in the forest.

Last month, a female tailor, simply known as Funmi committed suicide in Yaba, Lagos State.

The incident took place at a Boys Quarter behind the late tailor’s shop at 4, Adebiaye Street, off Tejuosho Road, Yaba.

Residents could not say how the late Funmi, who was popularly known as Iya Hamida, took her own life. A trader said: “When she was passing my shop just this morning, I was calling her but she ignored me. Not until I heard she committed suicide.”

The shop owner, Iya Sewa, who hired Iya Hamida as assistant tailor, said the reason for her action was best known to her. According to Iya Sewa, the deceased didn’t show any signs of depression.

“I don’t know her reasons of choosing to kill herself; the only thing I know was that she was complaining over the contribution money she was meant to collect.”
