Court sends Ekiti cabman to prison for raping and robbing an undergraduate inside bush

An Ado-Ekiti Magistrate Court on Tuesday ordered immediate remand of a 21-year old cabman, Mr Tope Ojolo, for allegedly raping a female student of Ikere Ekiti College of Education inside bush before dispossessing her of certain valuables.

The trial magistrate who issued the order of remand on the request of the Ekiti Police Command said Ojolo would remain in the prison pending when the state Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) would issue legal advice on his case.

According to the Nigeria Police, Ojolo, 21, committed the offences he committed on September 17 and disappeared into the thin air.

The accused on the said date was said to have conveyed the victim from the town but veered into the bush a few metres away from the college campus where he raped her and robbed her of some of her personal effects.

Ojolo who spirited away after committing the offence turned himself in at the palace of the Ogoga of Ikere, Oba Adejimi Adu, after a manhunt was launched for him, after which the monarch handed him over to the police.

The suspect had confessed to the crime at the Ikere Main Police Station and exhibits such as offensive weapons were recovered from him

At the court proceeding, police prosecutor, Sergeant Monica Ikebuilo, urged the court to grant her request to enable her send the duplicate file to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

Defence counsel, Timi Omotoso, took date to approach the court for the bail of his client.

The presiding Magistrate, Mrs. Dolapo Akinsanya, ordered the remand of the suspect pending the issuance of the legal advice.
