Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in the South South has said that over N1bn was recovered from corrupt politicians and technocrats in the geo-political zone alone in the last eight months.
EFCC’s South-South Zonal Head, Ishaq Salihu made the disclosure in Port-Harcourt while soliciting for support of all Nigerians in the commission’s fight against graft .
The occasion was peaceful demonstration by Coalition of Civil Rights Organisations, Concerned Youths and the Ijaw Nation Worldwide to the EFCC’s office in Port=Harcourt to protest the on-going probe of the former first lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan.
He told the protesters that except there was a radical change in orientation of Nigerians, the country would not know progress.
Giving context to the proceed of crime recovered by the agency in the last eight months, Salihu explained that the amount falls into two categories.
According to Salihu, “Between January 2 and September 2 alone, the EFCC South-South office has recovered N1.30 billion. What I said can be verified, there are records on that.
“The amount falls into two categories. One, recovery from the Federal Government and the state governments, and recoveries from politicians, and individuals that reported their cases to the EFCC and whose money had been returned.
