In defiance to a subsisting order of a Federal high court sitting in Abuja which covertly annulled his leadership, the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has commenced move to hold the party’s national convention on August 17, this year in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State.
The Makarfi-led leadership had already released the list of party members on the National Convention Committee.
The committee said that the verdict of the Abuja Federal high court was a nullity.
It had already filed a notice of appeal to discharge the judgment.
It would be recalled that an Abuja Federal High Court had declared embattled factional Chairman of the party, Sen Ali Modu Sheriff as leader of the party.
The presiding judge in the case, Justice Okon Abang had also declared the Caretaker Committee under Makarfi as ilegal, saying it had no powers to conduct any activity on behalf of the party.
The Justice Abang’s judgment had been condemned in various quarters while the supporters of Senate Ali-Modus Sheriff had applauded it to high heavens.
In fact, about two petitions had been fired to the National Judicial Council (NJC) seeking probe of the judge and his removal from office if found guilty.
Although the order of a competent court of law remains valid and binding even if it was given by a drunken judge until it is vacated, the Makarfi – led faction in a statement by its secretary, Sen Ben Obi, said the August 17 national convention of the party would hold as slated.
The statement also announced approval of the nomination of members to serve on the National Convention Planning Committee.
According to the Makarfi-led faction, the Committees would be inaugurated on Friday in Abuja.
The list named the incumbent Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Chief Nyesom Wike, CON as Chairman, His Excellency Darius Ishiaku as Deputy Chairman, Sen. Ben Ndi Obi, CON as Secretary, Barr. Dr. Ibrahim Umar as Deputy Secretary and another 238 others as members.
Another list of 80 members on the finance committee of the national convention was also released.
