Terrorism: One killed, several injured in UK Parliament attack

The UK Parliament was placed on lockdown on Wednesday after a man stabbed a police officer in what local police are calling a terrorist attack.

The assailant was subsequently shot and killed by other officers.

Witnesses reported that a driver on the nearby Westminster Bridge crashed into pedestrians, killing at least one woman and wounding several others. It remains unclear if the driver was the same man who stabbed the police officer.

Witnesses also heard gunfire near Parliament, but it is not yet clear if the shots were fired by the police or the assailant.

The House of Commons was in session at the time of the attack and was immediately suspended. Lawmakers were asked to remain inside the building.

BBC reports that Prime Minister Theresa May was quickly escorted into a silver Jaguar by security officers and driven away.

London police deployed a helicopter to administer emergency services to the victims, many of whom are in “catastrophic” conditions, according to medics at the scene.

The Tube, London’s subway system, was shut down after the incident and the country was placed on on its second-highest alert level, indicating that the attack was carried out by terrorists.
