The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has shortlisted 98 applicants for screening for the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) for the year 2024.
The list, released on Monday, July 1, 2024, includes 87 advocates and 11 academics.
Among the notable names on the advocate applicants list are Monday Onyekachi Ubani, Esq., Oluronke Adeyemi, Esq., and Mofesomo Ayodeji Tayo-Oyetibo, Esq.
The academic applicants list features esteemed professors such as Prof. John Alewo Agbonika, Prof. Osy Ezechukwunyere Nwebo, and Prof. Nlerum Sunday Okogbule.
The shortlisted candidates would be screened to ascertain their professional competence, integrity, and contributions to the legal profession.
The LPPC has consequently invited the general public to comment on the integrity, reputation, and competence of the shortlisted applicants.
In a statement signed by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court who doubles as the Secretary of the LPDC, Hajo Sarki Bello, she said any comment on the applicants must be accompanied by a verifying affidavit deposed to by the author before a Superior Court of Record in Nigeria or before a Notary Public and submitted in twenty copies.
Bello said the publication of the shortlisted applicants’ names does not indicate their success in the process.
The rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria is the highest professional rank in the Nigerian legal profession, equivalent to the rank of Queen’s Counsel in the United Kingdom.
The conferment of the SAN rank is a recognition of the recipient’s distinguished legal career, outstanding contributions to the development of the law, and exemplary leadership in the legal profession.
The final list of successful applicants will be announced by the LPPC after a rigorous screening process, which includes an assessment of their professional competence, integrity, and contributions to the legal profession.
The conferment ceremony is expected to take place later this year.
