The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has disclosed that no state governor in the country has fully implemented financial autonomy for the judiciary.
Speaking on Sunday, the association’s President, Marwan Adamu,s aid it is worrying that full financial autonomy still remains a mirage 10 years after the Supreme Court endorsed independent funding of the judiciary.
He said the refusal by the state governors to comply has implications for the nation’s democracy.
“On the issue of autonomy we are where we are. The court had delivered judgment since 2014. We went on strike many times, and we entered a Memorandum of Understanding, with all the state governors.
“I can attest that there is no single state for now that complies. It is only a few states that are in partial compliance,” Adamu stated.
He further emphasized the importance of an independent and financially autonomous judiciary, saying, “It is a serious threat and a problem to our democracy because if the judiciary is not independent and has financial autonomy and independence, there is nothing one can achieve as far as our understanding is concerned.”
JUSUN has been advocating for the financial autonomy of the judiciary to ensure its independence from the executive branch.
The union has also been pushing for the implementation of peculiar allowances for its members, which have not been met thus far.
