Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State is set for a second term in office after securing victory in all 21 local government areas of the state in Saturday’s governorship election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) concluded the collation of results at its headquarters in Awka on Sunday and is expected to formally declare Soludo the winner.
Under the provisions of the Electoral Act, a candidate must obtain the majority of votes cast and secure at least 25 per cent of the total votes in no fewer than two-thirds of the state’s local government areas to be declared governor.
By sweeping all 21 LGAs, Soludo, the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), comfortably surpassed the legal threshold.
Soludo, first elected in 2021, will complete his first term in March 2026.
His re-election guarantees him a second and final tenure in office.
The APGA candidate defeated Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), George Moghalu of the Labour Party (LP), and 13 other contenders in what observers described as a closely contested race.
Although the exercise was largely peaceful across the state, some observer groups reported instances of alleged vote-buying in a few polling units.
YIAGA Africa, one of the accredited observer organisations, estimated voter turnout at between 20.28 and 22.92 per cent across the state.
