Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has outlined his expectations from the newly elected President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), Mr. Danlami Nmodu.
In a congratulatory message issued by his Special Assistant (Media), Rabiu Ibrahim, the Minister said he expects the new GOCOP leadership to promote unity, inclusiveness, and professionalism within the Guild.
He urged Nmodu and his executive members to build a strong and harmonious team that will strengthen the association and uphold its founding values.
“As I congratulate Mr. Nmodu, it pleases me to urge him to run an inclusive leadership that guarantees the participation of all GOCOP members in sustaining the collective aspirations of the Guild,” Idris said.
The Minister also advised the new GOCOP President to work closely with the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation in addressing the growing threat of fake news, misinformation, and disinformation, which he said continue to undermine the credibility of journalism.
He described Nmodu, publisher of Newsdiary Online, as a seasoned journalist who has earned respect through hard work, integrity, and professionalism.
“I trust Mr. Nmodu, who has built a distinguished career in journalism moulded in integrity, accountability, courage, and resilience, to bring the same values to his leadership of GOCOP and in collaboration with government to promote media fidelity and literacy,” he added.
Idris also commended the immediate past GOCOP President, Mrs. Maureen Chigbo, publisher of RealNews Online, for her dedicated service and remarkable leadership that enhanced the Guild’s growth and credibility.
Nmodu emerged President of GOCOP after defeating Mr. Segun Adeleye, Publisher and CEO of WorldStage Newsonline, in a keenly contested election. He secured 63 votes against Adeleye’s 17.
His election marks the first time a member from the northern part of the country will lead the Guild since its formation ten years ago — a development that many see as a step toward regional balance and inclusiveness.
