CLE names 122 universities approved for LL.B, lists 3 under admission moratorium

The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has released its list of 122 universities approved to offer the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme in Nigeria as of August 2026.

The Council, however, warned prospective students, parents and guardians against enrolling in Law programmes at universities that are not accredited by it.

In a public notice issued on Monday and dated August 14, 2026, the Council said students admitted into unapproved Law programmes would not be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Law School.

The notice was signed by Aderonke O. Osho, Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration.

The Council said only universities accredited by it are authorised to admit students into the LL.B programme in Nigeria.

“The Council of Legal Education hereby informs the general public, prospective students, parents, guardians, and other stakeholders that only universities accredited by the Council of Legal Education are authorised to admit students into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme in Nigeria,” the notice stated.

It added: “Furthermore, students admitted into Law programmes in universities that are not accredited by the Council of Legal Education will not be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Law School.”

The Council said the list was published “for the guidance of the public” and would be updated when necessary in line with its statutory mandate to regulate legal education in Nigeria.

Three universities under admission moratorium
The list also identifies universities that are subject to moratoriums on admission into their LL.B programmes for specified academic sessions.

Baze University, Abuja, is listed under a three-year moratorium covering the 2023/2024 to 2025/2026 academic sessions.

Lead City University, Ibadan, is subject to a five-year moratorium covering the 2023/2024 to 2027/2028 sessions.

The Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State, is listed under a two-year moratorium covering the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 sessions.

The Council said the restrictions were approved by its governing body.

The Council of Legal Education is the statutory body responsible for regulating legal education and professional legal training in Nigeria.

Accreditation of university Law programmes is distinct from admission into the Nigerian Law School, where graduates of approved LL.B programmes undertake the professional training required for qualification as legal practitioners.

The Council’s latest notice is therefore particularly relevant to prospective Law students, as admission into an unaccredited Law programme could prevent a graduate from proceeding to the Nigerian Law School.
