The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has confirmed that he and the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, signed a written agreement under which Obi would serve only one four-year term if elected president in 2027.
Kwankwaso disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television on Monday, saying the agreement provides for power to return to the North after the expiration of the four-year tenure.
Asked whether Obi’s commitment was binding, Kwankwaso said he had no reason to doubt that the former Anambra State governor would honour the agreement.
“I personally believe him. I don’t think, based on what I now know about him, that he will change his mind when the time comes. We are all gentlemen, even though we have accepted to put it on paper,” he said.
Kwankwaso said two separate agreements were signed—one by the party and another between himself and Obi.
“We have done one for the party, and we have done another one between the two of us,” he said.
Explaining the arrangement, Kwankwaso said both leaders agreed to work together to ensure that after a four-year administration from 2027 to 2031, the presidency would return to the North.
He said he accepted the vice-presidential nomination because he believes a single four-year southern presidency would promote national unity before power rotates back to the North.
According to him, the party remains focused on winning the 2027 election while also pursuing its medium- and long-term political plans.
Obi had in May pledged to serve only one term if elected president, saying he would not remain in office beyond four years.
“I want to be a one-term president because of stability. I would not stay a day, with a gun to my head, longer than four years,” Obi had said.
